SUMMARY:2025 Holiday Folk Concert
DESCRIPTION:Purchase Tickets Here \n \nThree of New England’s finest come together for an evening of old and new Christmas classics\, along with songs and tunes for the season. With guitars\, vocals\, piano\, mandolin\, fiddle\, upright and electric bass\, Susie Burke\, Kent Allyn and Steve Roy cover a lot of ground and take audiences on a December trip through folk\, bluegrass\, swing and an occasional Great American Songbook gem. This annual event is one of our best-loved\, and best-attended events of the year\, so be sure to buy your tickets ahead of time! \n\nSusie Burke is a singer\, guitarist\, educator and songwriter from southern Maine. Well-versed in a variety of contemporary and traditional folk styles\, Susie is best known for her work in a duo with her husband\, multi-instrumentalist and composer David Surette\, with whom she recorded seven albums and performed for thirty-five years. Reviews in the Boston Globe have said of Burke’s singing\, “her dark crystal voice is transporting”\, and “her phrasing is unerringly devoted to the lyric”. Susie continues to perform and teach throughout New England and beyond\, bringing a collaborative and joyful style to sharing music.\nKent Allyn is an in-demand accompanist and studio musician\, as well as a key member of several groups\, including Ben Baldwin & the Big Note\, and the Renovators. His stellar bass\, piano\, and electric guitar work have been heard on numerous recordings\, Susie and David’s among them.\nSteve Roy is a multi-instrumentalist from Eliot\, Maine who plays and teaches upright bass\, mandolin\, fiddle\, guitar\, and ukulele. Fluent in a vast array of musical styles from bluegrass to jazz to heavy metal\, he has toured with many of the acoustic world’s top acts\, and is well known locally for his work with numerous groups such as Old Hat Stringband\, Jazzputin and the Jug Skunks\, High Range\, and Steve and Dave Play Dead\, his Grateful Dead tribute duo with David Surette.\n\nTickets are $25 for adults and $20 for students/seniors\, and can be purchased online or in person at the Music School.  \nFor questions\, please call 603-228-1196. \nPlease note: there are no physical tickets for this event. SUMMARY:Bach's Lunch: Good People All: A Celtic Christmas (Liz & Dan Faiella)
DESCRIPTION:  \n \n \n  \nAs Christmastide draws near\, enjoy music for the season with a Celtic spin\, performed by Liz Faiella\, fiddle and vocals and Dan Faiella\, guitar. Liz & Dan will draw on repertoire from their new Christmas album\, Good People All\, to bring you everything from a fiddler’s take on medieval chant\, to fingerstyle guitar arrangements of carols\, to favorite Christmas folk songs. CDs and digital downloads of the album will be available for purchase at the concert\, as well as winter landscape paintings by Dan Faiella for the art lover on your gift list! \nLiz Faiella’s study of Celtic fiddling\, training in classical violin\, and love of social dancing have shaped her musical approach. Alongside her brother\, guitarist Dan Faiella\, she has taken the stage at premier folk venues throughout New England\, including Club Passim\, the Acadia Trad Festival\, Maine Celtic Celebration\, Little Sea Folk Festival\, and the Boston Celtic Music Festival. An experienced teacher\, she has shared her craft with students at camps\, festivals\, and community music schools. Liz is chair of the Folk Department at the Concord Community Music School in Concord\, NH\, where she teaches fiddle students\, coaches the Celtic Fiddle Ensemble\, and organizes the School’s annual Fall Fiddle Festival. She also is active as a YouTube and Patreon creator\, teaching fiddle tunes and techniques far and wide. \nDan Faiella is a guitarist specializing in traditional Celtic music. Trained as an accompanist through years of playing for New England contradances and for Irish fiddlers\, he has performed at venues and festivals around the country with numerous traditional music groups. In his solo playing\, Dan’s fingerstyle arrangements of traditional songs and tunes draw extensively on techniques and ornamentation from traditional idioms beyond those directly related to the guitar\, such as Celtic harp-playing\, sean-nós singing\, and uilleann piping. Over many years of playing solo and collaboratively\, he has developed an ability to adapt and synthesize these sounds into the context of the unique arrangement capabilities of the guitar. \nBach’s Lunches are free and open to the public. SUMMARY:Northern Lights 2025 Fall Concert: Songs of Hope and Resilience
DESCRIPTION:with special guests Euphonias (CCMS teen chorus). \nPrepare to be empowered and uplifted. This program is based on the poem by Emily Dickinson\, “Hope is the thing with feathers that perches in the soul and sings the tune without the words\, and never stops at all.” \nThe Northern Lights will be singing songs that answer the chaos of life with hope\, light\, and resilience. Song titles include: “Hope Lingers On” (written by Lissa Schneckenburger\, a traditional fiddle player who used to teach at CCMS\, “We Will Rise”\, “Resilience”\, “Light of a Clear Blue Morning”\, and “Tending the Spark”. \nAs the Northern Lights know that singing together makes people happy\, they have also planned several sing-alongs\, including “If Not Now\, Tell Me When?”\, “The Power of Kindness”\, and “Singing for our Lives”. \nInstrumentation includes guitars\, piano\, cajon\, and percussion. \nThe concert takes place in the Recital Hall at Concord Community Music School. DESCRIPTION:New England’s first post-pandemic Piano Somatics Institute returns to Concord this year on June 20 – 22\, with two special free introductory events on Friday\, June 20 in the Recital Hall. This is the perfect opportunity to discover how Alan Fraser and Piano Somatics can help improve your piano playing – even create a breakthrough! \nFREE INTRODUCTORY LECTURE FOR YOUNG PIANISTS – FRIDAY\, 4 PM \nIn the first introductory seminar\, Alan will introduce young pianists to Pianimals\, the first ever piano method based on the Feldenkrais Method. The children will be taken through a series of exercises to improve how the hand stands\, walks\, runs and jumps on key\, and a couple of mini-demo lessons given to volunteers from the audience will show how it works in practice. This is a free event open to all interested pianists and their families and friends. \nFREE INTRODUCTORY LECTURE FOR TEENS AND ADULTS – FRIDAY\, 5 PM \nThe second hour is dedicated to older CCMS students and staff (teens and adults)\, with exercises taken not only from Pianimals but from Fraser’s other books on piano technique. Again\, audience members will be taken through a series of movements for the hand\, and then shown in a couple of small demo lessons how these strategies can quickly transform one’s ability and sound at the keyboard. DESCRIPTION:Hari Maya Adhikari\,  Prem Sagar Khatiwada\, David Nugent\, William Fletcher\, and Sushil Gautam perform a variety of traditional Indian and Nepalese tunes. \nHari Maya Adhikari is originally from Nepal\, holds a Master’s in Music from the Banaras Hindu University in Varanasi\, India\, and taught music at a university in Nepal. She performs for Indian\, Bhutanese\, and Nepali communities in New Hampshire and throughout the Northeast\, especially for religious events and important traditional celebrations. She plays classical Indian music as well as sacred and popular tunes\, and composes some of her own music in the South Asian traditions. \nPrem Sagar Khatiwada holds a Master’s degree in music from the Banaras Hindu University in Varanasi\, India. He was born in Nepal and comes from a very musical family; his brothers play the bamboo flute and sing. He plays the tabla (a double drum with resonating surfaces on the top side) and the madal (a single drum with resonating surfaces on either end). After graduate work\, he was on the music faculty of a university in Nepal. In addition to his musical expertise\, Mr. Khatiwada studied Sanskrit and is a Hindu priest. (by special arrangement) \nWilliam Fletcher holds degrees in Choral Music Education and in Music Theory and Composition from the University of New Hampshire. He retired\, after 37 years\, from the faculty of St. Paul’s School (Concord\, NH) where\, in addition to his duties as Wind Ensemble director and Choirmaster for 30 years\, he taught voice\, composition and music theory. He is a former faculty member  of CCMS.  In addition\, he has taught public schools in both Weston\, Ct. and Horseheads\, N.Y. He is a frequent adjudicator and guest conductor of music festivals throughout New England. As music director of the Concord Chorale \, a 75 voice auditioned community chorus\, he has led tours of France\, Italy\, Switzerland\, Germany\, Austria\, Ireland\, Canada and Czechoslovakia. In addition to being a respected music composer and producer\, Fletcher is also known as a talented portrait painter and graphic/web designer. \nSushil Gautam graduated from Tribhuvan Universit in his native Nepal in 2002. He dedicated years of work toward the preservation and promotion of Nepalese ethnic musical instruments and culture\, including writing a book on the sarangee (a traditional Nepalese bowing instrument) and helping to establish Music Museum of Nepal in Kathmandu.In addition to his work as a Nepali language interpreter and instructor for foreign students\, international travelers\, and diplomats\, Gautam has performed on stages in Nepal\, India\, China\, Europe\, and the United States. Now a permanent resident of the US\, Gautam lives and works in Massachusetts. \nThis event will be held in our historic Recital Hall. We are so happy to tell you that Carlo will be joining us in 2025! Carlo’s illustrious career began with learning from his father in his native Savona. He is now is a world-renowned player and teacher of traditional Italian classical mandolin repertoire\, but his interests and skills span across many genres. Carlo’s deep interest in outreach activities focused on his instrument is witnessed by his countless collaborations with mandolin orchestras and chamber orchestras around the world\, as well as collaborations with a great number of fellow musicians including Beppe Gambetta and David Grisman. He is also regularly invited to judge mandolin contests\, give lectures\, and teach workshops in many countries. In the last few years he has toured Japan\, USA\, Panama\, Australia\, India\, Switzerland\, France\, Norway and Germany. He has been awarded both the first prize at the Concorso Internazionale “Pitzianti” in Venice\, and first prize at the Walnut Valley National Mandolin Contest in Winfield\, Kansas! In 2006 he founded the International Italian Mandolin Accademia in Genoa Nervi\, where David Surette taught in both 2018 and 2019. https://www.carloaonzo.com/ \n  \nWe are pleased to welcome into our mando family Nashville mandolin player Sharon Gilchrist! Our festival founder David had hoped to hire Sharon for a number of years\, and we’re thrilled that our schedules have finally meshed. Sharon Gilchrist began touring the national bluegrass circuit in her home state of Texas before earning a BA in Mandolin Performance at Belmont University in Nashville\, TN. For two decades\, Sharon has performed with many of the groundbreaking legends in bluegrass and new acoustic music including The Peter Rowan and Tony Rice Quartet\, Scott Nygaard and John Reischman in The Harmonic Tone Revealers\, Darol Anger\, Tony Trischka\, The CA Bluegrass Reunion Band\, Laurie Lewis and the Right Hands\, Uncle Earl and many others. She is also a respected and influential music educator offering private mandolin instruction\, online mandolin courses at http://www.pegheadnation.com\, and teaching at music camps internationally. In 2024\, Sharon joined the John Hartford Fiddle Tune Project as a featured artist and co-producer on their Vol 2. album\, which will be released in early 2025. We asked him to come back for 2025 and are glad he said yes! Multi-instrumentalist\, producer\, step dancer and host of the TradCafe podcast\, Neil Pearlman is a vital and distinctive voice in contemporary folk music. While he is best known for his groundbreaking approach to the piano in Celtic music\, Neil is also a fantastic mandolinist\, as anyone who attended the 2024 mandolin festival can attest. Neil’s playing is continually evolving and spontaneous without losing its roots in the traditional piano styles of Atlantic Canada\, New England and Scotland. He has appeared internationally at major festivals such as the Newport Folk Festival\, Celtic Connections in Glasgow\, Celtic Colours in Cape Breton and the Orkney Folk Festival and has recorded or performed with luminaries of traditional folk music including Natalie MacMaster\, Darol Anger\, Seamus Egan and Alasdair Fraser. Neil plays with the wonderful Maine-based quartet the Pine Tree Flyers\, in addition to his solo work and other collaborations. Will has taught at the mandolin festival several times over the years\, always to rave reviews. Will plays everything from Brazilian choro music to bluegrass to the Beatles. He has been playing music since the age of 6\, starting on piano and taking up guitar at age 12. Mandolin and bass soon followed\, and he’s been leading bands since he was thirteen. He studied at Middlebury College in Vermont and discovered a deep connection with the rural landscape there\, but his travels have taken him to Rio\, Paris and the Caribbean as well as all over the U.S. and Canada. During the last twenty years he has been visiting and playing in Paris\, and has been recording and collaborating with legendary manouche guitarist Ninine Garcia. He also has a passion for Brazilian music\, exploring the music known as choro with his band Estrela do Norte\, and in the last 5 years he has been performing with the Vermont Mandolin Trio featuring Matt Flinner and Jamie Masefield. Pianist Jacqueline Schwab spins musical stories out of the myriad strands in the American quilt and with the spirit of community music making at their heart. Her signature playing features in over a dozen of Ken Burns’ documentaries\, including his Grammy-winning Civil War\, Baseball\, Lewis and Clark\, Mark Twain\, The War and Benjamin Franklin\, as well as The Irish in America—The Long Journey Home and other PBS documentaries. She has performed at the White House for President Clinton and twice on PBS with the American Pops Orchestra and has accompanied Scottish singer Jean Redpath on public radio’s A Prairie Home Companion and on CBS’s Late Show with David Letterman. As a solo pianist\, she has performed vintage music in almost every state of the Union. She is well known to the traditional dance world for her groundbreaking playing with the Bare Necessities ensemble. Her recently-released solo album I Lift My Lamp—Illuminations from Immigrant America celebrates vintage music from American immigrants. A recent project has been a collaboration with Alliance for New Music-Theatre\, Washington\, DC\, where Jacqueline performed Ukrainian traditional music to accompany readings of recently translated plays about the war in Ukraine. Jacqueline graduated from New England Conservatory\, majoring in piano improvisation. She grew up in Pittsburgh and has since lived in Boston and on Cape Cod. \nMaking Magic with Ken Burns\, featuring pieces from Jacqueline’s Burns soundtrack performances\, as well as pieces from her own work inspired by Ken’s piercing window into American history. From Burns’ documentaries\, you will hear Jacqueline’s interpretation of Jay Ungar’s well-loved “Ashokan Farewell”\, along with well-known vintage American standards\, such as “Be Thou My Vision”\, “Tenting on the Old Campground” and “Take Me Out to the Ballgame”\, as well as lesser-known period tunes\, such as the traditional Scottish “Sae Merry As We Hae Been”. Recent opera performances include\nDorabella in Mozart’s Così fan tutte with Opera51. Past concert performances include the alto soloist\nin Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony and Handel’s Messiah. Emily is also a professional pianist and\norganist and has accompanied productions of La Bohème and Der Schauspieldirektor for Opera\nNew Hampshire’s educational initiative. As a ballet pianist\, Emily worked with the apprentice\ncompany of Boston Ballet (BBII) and the San Francisco Opera dance corps. When not pursuing\nmusical ventures\, Emily loves sewing\, embroidery\, and most of all\, being a mom to her two\nrambunctious young children. \nCody Switzer:\nBorn in Mobile\, Alabama\, Cody Switzer began playing guitar at 10 years old starting with classical\nguitar lessons from the professor at the University of South Alabama and continuing throughout\nmiddle and high school. He continued his music education at the University of Alabama where he\nobtained his Bachelor’s Degree in Music Performance. Post-graduation he moved to Tallahassee\,\nFlorida to study with Bruce Holzman at Florida State University\, obtaining a Master’s Degree in Arts\nAdministration at FSU in 2018. During this time he was elected the president of the Classical Guitar\nSociety at FSU and director of the FSU Modern Guitar Ensemble.
