This April Fools Day, turn cartwheels into wholeness. Jump on the springboard of this workshop for personal renewal. Through playful singing, drumming, improvisational toning, and sound healing, we will flip old habits upside down, reframe negative self-talk, and experience a new joy of self. Join us for a day of empowerment, “emfoolerment” and springtime alignment!

All are welcome, no musical experience is required!

Improvised chanting and playful singing are as old as human existence and as new as every young child. Drawing from Bobby McFerrin’s Circlesong techniques, we’ll use call and response and layered rhythms to help you embrace the freedom to play, sing, invent, and imagine. Discover your own creativity, as we sing together over some simple musical structures that take the “improv fear” away.

Fall Fiddle Festival

For: Fiddlers and violinists, recommended for teens and adults of all levels

  • Are you looking to play music with fellow fiddlers?
  • Do you want to experience different fiddling traditions?
  • Are you a violinist who wants to try transforming your violin into a fiddle for a day?

Whether you are a beginner with a basic knowledge of the violin, or an experienced fiddler who knows the ropes, join fiddlers Pascal Gemme (Quebecois), Mariel Vandersteel (Scandinavian and Old-Time), and Liz Faiella (Irish and contradance) for a day of fiddling workshops. Find out what makes each fiddling tradition sound unique, try new bowings and ornamentation, learn by ear, and expand your fiddling repertoire. At the end of the day, enjoy a toe-tapping evening concert featuring Festival faculty.

For: String players, age 11 through adult, of intermediate playing ability

  • Does your school or community not have an orchestra program?
  • Do you want to meet other string players in an ensemble setting?
  • Are you too busy for a year-long rehearsal schedule?

Experience the fullness of a larger ensemble, and gain skills in following a conductor, counting more precisely, and matching intonation.  Participants should be able to read in keys up to three sharps and two flats, and have experience counting eighth and sixteenth notes. Repertoire will be primarily in first position, with some third position.
