Musicians Reach Next Level with Alan Fraser Institute: June 19-23 at Concord Community Music School
From June 19 through June 23, Concord Community Music School will host the Alan Fraser Institute, a chance for pianists and other musicians to work with an internationally renowned practitioner of the Feldenkrais method. The teachings of the Alan Fraser Institute are described as “improved physical organization for deeper artistic expression,” and can help musicians at any level (and any age) achieve musical breakthroughs with every instrument and voice.
Kathryn Southworth, the Music School’s dean of students & faculty and piano faculty member, attended Alan Fraser’s Piano Institute a number of years ago, where her experience “changed everything from how I walk to how I play the piano.” She said, “At Concord Community Music School, we place great value on having a healthy approach to music making. Although Alan is a concert pianist, he works with any and all individuals, including athletes, physical therapists, and individuals who have experienced a variety of injuries or problematic conditions.” During the year, musicians may be interested in continuing their studies with voice faculty member Victoria Cole, who specializes in the Alexander Technique.
Cello faculty member Kate Jensik described her experience with the Alan Fraser Institute: “I put my heart and soul into the Rachmaninoff Cello sonata – nevertheless, Alan helped me take my interpretation even further. Every small adjustment to my sitting posture led to new subtle nuances appearing in the emotional tone.” She added, “Not only was I playing the cello with my whole body, I was using all of myself to create higher emotional states. These insights into the use of self for artistic expression were a revelation to me.”
The New England musical community is fortunate to have the Alan Fraser Institute returning to the Music School this year, and we invite musicians from far and wide to come and participate in this unique musical opportunity. In 2018, the North American Institutes take place in Washington, DC; Amherst, MA; Toronto, Canada; Salt Lake City, UT; and here in Concord, NH.
