  • You could have fun making music with new friends

...Now's the time to join the Music School’s New Horizons Band! Director: Maria Isaak

We hope you will join us for the new New Horizons Band at CCMS! Rehearsals are on Thursdays.

New Horizons Beginner Band - Thursdays, 5:45 - 6:45 pm
Always wanted to join a band but your mom wouldn’t let you play a loud instrument? This weekly group class of mixed band instruments will start at the very beginning and help you gain enough comfort to play in an ensemble, including the New Horizons Band!

New Horizons Concert Band - Thursdays, 7:00 - 8:15 pm
A community band that welcomes adults of all ages who play woodwind, brass, or percussion instruments. No auditions, no requirements, just reasonable comfort on your instrument to get started.

To register for either program, please call 603-228-1196.

Under the direction of Maria Isaak, New Horizons at CCMS is a supportive group for those who have always wanted to learn an instrument, those who haven’t played in years, and even players who have kept their music making current and desire to play in a concert band setting. We currently have two divisions, Beginner Band and Concert Band, so there is a playing level right for everyone.

In January of 2020, CCMS began its first ever New Horizons Beginner and Concert Band. We had wonderful rehearsals and were getting ready for our first appearance when Covid-19 caused all activity to come to a screeching halt.

This fall semester, we are excited to begin rehearsals once again through our distance learning platform. It will be great to see and hear the band again! A wonderful component of our ensemble is the support and encouragement everyone contributes.

Rehearsals are once a week. Standard band literature graded level 2-3 in all styles and genres will be played and performed (virtually and live when possible). Some of the tools we will use this fall semester to enhance our virtual rehearsals include Zoom Break-Out Rooms for sectionals, Smart Music, Google Classroom, & virtual concerts. There are no auditions and everyone is welcome!

Beginners may schedule private zoom lessons with Maria in preparation for joining full rehearsals.

About the Director
Maria Isaak performs as a bassoonist with a number of ensembles throughout New England. As director of the Purple Finches choral program, she has enabled her students to win highly competitive auditions each year for the OAKE National Choir, to appear in prominent community events, and to collaborate with Eastern Ballet, Suncook Valley Community Chorus, and Concord Chorale. Maria received a master’s degree in bassoon performance from the New England Conservatory and studied choral music at the International School for Kodály Studies in Hungary. She is also on the faculty at St. Paul’s School.

Maria has decades of experience teaching band instruments and directing public and private school band programs, including the San Francisco public schools and multiple school districts in New Hampshire and Maine. At the Concord Community Music School, she teaches bassoon, coaches woodwind chamber music ensembles, and has led the 60-voice Purple Finches Youth Chorus program for 17 years.
