Grace Schust and Lindsey Schust will present a brief history of the origins of African music in the Caribbean and the Americas, tracing the migration of African peoples, instruments, and musical styles. The lecture will include demonstrations, of various percussive techniques and drumming rhythms from Africa and the African Diaspora. Grace and Lindsey will explore how African rhythms and traditions traveled to the “New World,” carrying with them the history of the slave trade and African cultures.
“Musical Migrations” is the theme of this year’s Bach’s Lunch programs, which are an outgrowth of the Music School’s leadership work on the Steering Committee of the Welcoming Concord Initiative. Welcoming Concord began through the statewide efforts of the Endowment for Health’s Immigration Integration Initiative, and is a forum for collective action and shared learning, with the goal of warmly welcoming New Americans into the cultural, economic, and civic life of the region.
The Bach's Lunch Series is sponsored by the Timothy and Abigail Walker Lecture Fund and the Gertrude Couch Trust; TD Wealth Management, NA; Trustee. For more information, please call 603-228-1196 or visit www.ccmusicschool.org.
